Who's behind 'Body of Knowledge'...
I've always taken the road less travelled: ride the train whenever possible, dumped my satellite and only watch hand-selected films, make intricate petit point tapestries, and love wearing ankle weights.
I've also been slightly ahead of my time. Unconventional. Non-traditional. Over the last quarter century I've been immersed in the art and science of learning, practicing and teaching what many now consider the state-of-the-art in maximizing human performance: the Feldenkrais Method®.
Born to a family straddling mainstream and complementary alternative medicine (birth educators, hospice and pediatric nurses, meditation teachers, obstetricians, osteopaths, sports medicine docs), my holistic health career sprung from fertile soil.
That plus my experience of surviving a terrible car crash.
In 1978 I fell asleep at the wheel and drove into a telephone pole. My leg broke in half and my elbow pierced the windshield. My first surgery left me pretty lopsided. I limped into my first Feldenkrais® lesson leaning on a cane, and walked out without it. I was inspired. I wanted to know how to do that, to make that kind of difference in other peoples' lives!
At the age of 19, I entered a Feldenkrais® professional training led by the late Dr. Feldenkrais, who founded this method of brain-body learning. It was my tremendous good fortune to have received something of his astonishing body of knowledge.
In 1983, I graduated from that program in Tel Aviv as a certified Practitioner. Ten years later I became an Assistant Trainer.
I've been involved in the education of future Feldenkrais professionals in dozens of training programs, and have maintained Functional Integration® practices near San Francisco and in NYC. I've taught Awareness Through Movement® restorative fitness classes in integrative medicine clinics, wellness centers, for horseback riders, yoga students, and people recovering from back injuries and psychiatric problems.
I also mentored with pioneers in the field of body image and eating disorders, and have facilitated workshops for women with eating problems internationally. My work has taken me to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Europe and India.
Since my early twenties I've always looked years younger than my age (and quite liked it). When the tragic loss of a loved one recently strained my own health, the stress added years to my appearance and sapped my vitality. Seeing how stress compromised my own well-being forced on me the realization that I could no longer afford to take my health for granted. My self-care became a much higher priority.
Knowing that between our modern lifestyles and the depleted soil our crops are grown in, it's impossible to get the nutrition needed to match the extreme demands we place on our bodies. The supplements I've taken in the past never made any palpable difference. I just never felt anything! With these whole food products I experienced real impact on my health & functioning.
My clients who are supplementing with these formulas are responding with the same impact. Better nourished, they're being reached in places that my work alone can't touch. They're less achy and stiff, less cranky and constipated, more chipper, and getting deeper, more satisfying changes.
Because of my own positive experience, I've expanded Body of Knowledge by integrating these first-rate products, making them available in my office, in stores, spas, and online.
Since I've been out on the fringes for much of my life, I'm tickled to see that many of the 'alternatives' of yesterday are now getting the mainstream scientific respect and attention that they deserve, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.
